Dan Boren, K7NXL will share his experiences becoming an active CW operator and adventuring to Montana for a Field Day.

In January of 2022, I was a student in the fundamental level CW Academy class and struggling to operate at 10 words per minute. Just 6 months later, Mike Conatore K7NT and I were invited to travel to Shawmut, MT for Field Day and operate along with several very experienced and accomplished contesters. This included Chris Hurlbut KL9A, who in 2014 shared the title of World Radio Sport Champion. Being new and inexperienced, this seemed an incredible opportunity-- and terrifyingly intimidating. I will show some photos and describe our weekend. I will also show that thanks to the welcoming and generous culture among radio amateurs, any fears I had were completely unfounded.
